Car rental insurance in Argentina: how it works

Short answer: when you rent a car on Rentennials in Argentina, that car always has comprehensive insurance with a deductible that includes civil liability, regardless of which coverage you choose. If something happens, the most you pay is the deductible for that car. And if you want to pay even less, you can add the Premium or Platinum Coverage, which significantly reduce that deductible.

Insurance is the part that raises the most questions when you rent a car from a private owner. Is the car really insured? What happens if I have an accident? How much do I pay if my backpack gets stolen? In this guide we explain everything, no fine print.

All cars have comprehensive insurance with civil liability

No car is listed on Rentennials without a valid comprehensive insurance policy with a deductible. This insurance is the car owner's own policy (the host) and must be enabled for rental without a driver. We take care of verifying this and only vehicles that have this insurance can be listed.

What this base insurance covers:

  • Vehicle damage from collision, rollover, fire or theft, above the deductible.
  • Third-party liability: damage to other people, other vehicles or third-party property, in accordance with Argentine law requirements.
  • Total theft of the vehicle.

Before a car is listed, our team reviews the policy and confirms it meets these requirements. At the time of handover, the host provides you with a copy of the policy.

Which insurance companies we work with

Rentennials is not an insurance company. What we do is verify policies and facilitate coverage through agreements. In Argentina we work together with BIND Insurance Brokers, which provides us with coverage from insurance companies such as RUS (Río Uruguay Seguros), Sancor Seguros, La Mercantil Andina, Triunfo Seguros and Cooperación Seguros, among others.

What is the deductible in a car rental

The deductible is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen during your rental. Everything above that amount is covered by the insurance company. Each car has its own deductible, as it depends on the host's policy, and you can see it in the listing before booking.

How it works in practice:

  • If the damage costs less than the deductible, you only pay the actual repair cost. Rentennials mediates between you and the host to ensure only the appropriate amount is charged and nothing more.
  • If the damage costs more than the deductible, you pay the deductible and the rest is covered by the insurance company.
  • Each claim is independent: the deductible applies per event.

Franchise and security deposit are not the same

The security deposit is a hold on your credit card that is placed before the rental and released when you return the car if there were no issues. It is not a charge. The deductible is the maximum amount you would pay if there is an incident. They may have different amounts, and both are reduced if you add a Premium or Platinum coverage.

Basic, Premium and Platinum Coverage: which one is right for you

The three coverages are based on the same comprehensive car insurance. What changes is how much you pay if something happens. The Basic is included. The Premium lowers the deductible and the deposit. The Platinum does the same and also covers tires, rims, and the theft of belongings inside the car.

The price of Premium and Platinum is paid once per reservation and varies depending on the car and the number of days. You will see it at the time of booking.

How Premium and Platinum work on the inside

Here's the key that almost nobody explains. Premium and Platinum don't replace the car's insurance: they are backed by another insurance company, different from the one that insures the vehicle, which covers part of the deductible on that policy.

In other words, the host's policy continues to cover the car as always. If there is a claim, the deductible on that policy is split: the larger portion is paid by this second insurer and you only pay the reduced deductible. That's why the difference is so significant and why the deposit we hold from you also decreases.

Example with Premium

  • You scratched a door and the repair costs less than the reduced deductible: you only pay the actual cost of the repair.
  • You had a collision and the damage exceeds the reduced deductible: you only pay the reduced deductible. The secondary insurer covers its portion of the deductible and the car policy covers the rest.
  • Your car gets stolen: you only pay the reduced deductible, never the value of the vehicle.
  • Hail: you only pay up to the deductible amount if the repair cost is higher.
  • Glass breakage: you only pay up to the deductible amount if the repair cost is higher.

Platinum Coverage: everything in Premium plus tires, rims and luggage

The Platinum is the only coverage that also protects what you carry inside the car. It includes the reduced deductible and deposit from the Premium and adds two protections that no other option has.

Tire and wheel protection

Without Platinum, tire damage is your responsibility. With Platinum:

  • Repairable punctures: we cover the repair at the shop.
  • Cracks or bulges: if the damage compromises the tire's safety, we cover a new one.
  • Full replacement: when the shop determines that repairing it is not safe, we cover the replacement, up to 2 tires per reservation.
  • One claim per reservation: the first incident is covered. A second independent damage event during the same rental is not covered.
  • Does not apply to normal wear and tear or to damage the tire already had at the start of the reservation.

What you need to file a claim

  1. Police report. It is mandatory: without it, no coverage is possible.
  2. Evidence that the car was locked and was forced open, for example a broken window or a tampered lock.
  3. Proof that you had those items: photos taken before the trip, proof of purchase, bank statement, or a photo of the item.
  4. Notify Rentennials within 48 hours of the theft, via WhatsApp at +54 9 261 701-4716 or at ayuda@rentennials.app.

Tip: before you leave, take photos of everything of value you bring in the car. It greatly speeds up reimbursement and prevents rejections due to lack of evidence.

Examples

  • A tire blows out on the road and the shop says it can't be safely repaired: we cover the new tire.
  • Your laptop and backpack are stolen from a broken-into car: with the police report and prior photos, you receive reimbursement up to your coverage limit.

What to do if you have a crash or a theft

Notify Rentennials and the host immediately. The sooner we know, the faster the insurance is activated and the less paperwork you have to deal with.

  1. Get to safety and, if there are injuries, call 911.
  2. Notify immediately Rentennials via WhatsApp at +54 9 261 701-4716 or by email at ayuda@rentennials.app, and the host through the app.
  3. Take photos and videos of the car, the scene, and the other vehicles. Write down the license plate, name, ID, and insurance company of the other driver, and witness information if available.
  4. Do not admit fault to third parties without speaking with us first.
  5. File a police report when required or when the insurance company requests it. In the case of theft, it is always mandatory.
  6. Report it at check out: describe what happened when returning the car.

What makes you lose coverage

The insurance and any additional coverage become void if:

  • You drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • A person not authorized in the reservation drives the vehicle.
  • You leave the province or country without the host's permission.
  • You do unauthorized off-roading or use the car for commercial purposes.
  • You fail to report the incident, do not cooperate, or do not file a claim when required.

In those cases, all damages are entirely the responsibility of the driver. Traffic fines are also not covered by any insurance: they are the driver's responsibility, even if they arrive after the rental period.

Other options that may help you

Renting a car without a credit card

For some cars, you can leave the security deposit without a credit card by adding a deposit insurance when booking. This option can be combined with Premium and Platinum. It is only available for certain vehicles and cities, so check the listing to see if the car offers it.

Drivers aged 22 to 25

To rent on Rentennials you need to be over 25 years old. In Argentina, if you are between 22 and 25, you can still rent by purchasing the Premium Coverage, which is mandatory for that age. You can also choose the Platinum. In all cases you need a valid physical driver's license (learner's permits are not accepted).

Rentennials Cover is not car insurance

Rentennials Cover is a cancellation insurance. It allows you to cancel your reservation up to 5 hours after the start of the rental and recover the full deposit. It does not cover vehicle damage: for that, there is comprehensive insurance and Premium and Platinum coverages.

Frequently asked questions about Rentennials insurance in Argentina

Do Rentennials' cars have insurance?

Yes. All cars listed in Argentina have comprehensive insurance with a deductible, including civil liability and authorized for rental without a driver. Rentennials reviews each policy before listing the car.

What is a rental car deductible?

It's the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen during your rental. Anything above that amount is covered by the insurance company. Each car has its own and you can see it in the listing.

What if the damage costs less than the deductible?

You pay only the real cost of the repair. Rentennials mediates with the host so you are never overcharged.

What is the difference between Premium and Platinum Coverage?

Both reduce the deductible and security deposit by the same amount. The Platinum also covers tires and rims, and the theft of personal belongings and luggage.

Who pays for the deductible portion I save with Premium or Platinum?

Another insurance company, different from the one that insures the car. It covers part of the deductible on the host's policy, and you only pay the reduced deductible.

Does the Premium or Platinum Coverage get paid per day?

It's paid once per booking. The price depends on the car and the number of days, and you can see it before confirming.

Does insurance cover flat tires?

Only if you hired the Platinum Coverage. Without it, tire damage is the driver's responsibility.

What insurance companies work with Rentennials in Argentina?

We work together with BIND Brokers de Seguros, which provides us with coverage from RUS, Sancor Seguros, La Mercantil Andina, Triunfo Seguros and Cooperación Seguros, among others.

Can I rent without a credit card?

In some cars yes, by adding a deposit insurance when booking. It can be combined with Premium and Platinum, but it is not available on all vehicles.

What should I do if something is stolen from my car?

File a police report, gather evidence that the car was broken into, and notify Rentennials within 48 hours via WhatsApp at +54 9 261 701-4716 or at ayuda@rentennials.app. If you have Platinum Coverage, we will reimburse you up to your coverage limit.

Choose your car at rentennials.app and, when booking, add the coverage that gives you the most peace of mind. If you have any questions, write to us and we'll answer them before you head out.
