The months of August and early September are the best time to ski in Bariloche. By this time, the winter school holidays in Argentina are over and the number of people on the slopes is much lower than in July. Yes, you will have a more relaxed experience and get on the lifts much faster 

Keep in mind that ski resorts in Bariloche usually open from mid-June until the beginning of spring in September. Sometimes weather conditions allow the season to extend into October.

In Bariloche you have two ski centers to choose from: Cerro Catedral and the ones located at Cerro Otto. Catedral is the most well-known and visited in Argentina and the region. Not far away, Cerro Otto offers other activities besides skiing, which can be ideal for those looking for a different pace.

The Cerro Catedral in Bariloche is the place chosen by many skiers, from beginners to the most experienced. It spans more than 1200 hectares and the services it offers are among the highest level in South America. It has more than 30 lift systems (chairlifts, gondolas and surface lifts), which allows around 28 thousand people to ascend per hour.

Here are some more details about Cerro Catedral. The summit height is about 2200 meters above sea level, while the base is at 1030 meters above sea level. It has a skiable vertical drop of 1150 meters, while the maximum ski run length is 9 km.

There are different types of passes or tickets to access all the ski lifts. If you go for one day, you can get the Day Pass, which allows you to enter for one day. The cost for adults is approximately 100 USD, while children (ages 5 to 11) pay around 90 USD.

If your plan is to go for more days, you can purchase the Flexi Pass, whose price varies depending on the number of days you choose. Options range from 2 to 30 days. As a reference, a one-week pass costs around 750 USD for adults, and 550 USD for children.

For those looking for more comfort, there is the Exclusive Pass option, which gives you priority access to the ski lifts. Like the Flexi Pass, its cost depends on the number of days you need.

Finally, you can also go up even if you are not skiing. There is a pedestrian access that costs around 30 USD for adults and 20 USD for children.

One important thing to keep in mind: children aged 0 to 5 do not pay for the lift.

Cerro Catedral is 20 km from the center of Bariloche. The best way to get there is, first, rent a car in Bariloche. The route usually taken is Avenida Bustillo heading toward Cerro Campanario until provincial route 82, where you need to turn left. Then continue following the signs.

Keep in mind that during the peak winter season, the journey from the center of Bariloche to Cerro Catedral can take between one and two hours in the early morning. The same applies in the late afternoon.

At Cerro Otto you'll find a more family-friendly atmosphere with more relaxed snow activities. This place is famous for its summit café and its cable car. During winter you can also combine it with sledding, tubing, sleigh rides or zipline.

While there are skiing options, here the offer is for beginners and less physically demanding. For those just getting started in this sport, it might be a good idea to visit Cerro Otto before experiencing Catedral.

At Cerro Otto there are two snow centers. Piedras Blancas, which offers multiple activities, and the Nordic Ski Center, ideal for this sport suitable for all audiences.

The Piedras Blancas tourist center is the ideal place if you're looking for snow activities for the little ones or if you want to do something other than skiing. This place is famous for sled rides, snow safari, zipline, tubing and other snow activities. 

You can also learn to ski. There are beginner slopes and a ski school perfect for getting started in this winter sport.

Prices can be a bit more affordable than Cerro Catedral. They can range from 30 USD to 110 USD depending on the type of activity you choose.

Can you imagine walking on skis? This is the sport that comes from northern Europe. You just have to put on the equipment and start gliding. The best part is that you don't need any prior knowledge. The place to do it is the Nordic Ski Center.

You also have other activities: rides on tracked quad bikes, snowmobiles, or snowshoe hikes. And you can always end the day having a hot chocolate snack at the café, or stay for dinner with beautiful mountain views.

To get to Cerro Otto from downtown Bariloche you only have to drive about ten kilometers. The best way is by car. You need to take Avenida Belgrano, then Videla street to Avenida de los Pioneros. The access to the Cerro is there.

During peak winter season it takes longer than usual. Just take it easy and you will get there anyway.

The cost of skiing in Bariloche depends on the number of days you plan to do this activity. Additionally, there are times during winter that are a bit more expensive. If we consider a week of skiing or snowboarding, equipment rental and accommodation, the price will be approximately 1500 USD per person. 

Of course, the price can be higher or lower depending on the hotel, meals and other expenses you may have. To cut costs, we recommend traveling towards the end of August and early September when accommodation prices drop compared to July.

• Book in advance. July and early August are very busy months. Therefore, rent the equipment, secure your accommodation and buy your pass ahead of time.
