The beaches in Lima prove once again that the Peruvian capital is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Miraflores, the boardwalk, the historic center, and one of the best cuisines in the world make it worth spending more time than many travelers give this city. And, on top of that, there are beautiful beaches to relax by the sea.

Sometimes travelers skip a tour of Lima and head straight to Cusco. But as we always say, every destination has a charm that deserves to be revealed. So, before continuing your journey to Peru's must-sees, take at least three days to explore one of Latin America's most beautiful capitals. You'll see it's worth it.

The beaches in Lima are the kind that blend the urban with a typical Pacific landscape. Cliffs, cold waters, perfect waves for surfing, and a natural charm to relax in the middle of the city. That said, some beaches have small pebbles or coarse sand, but that doesn't stop you from enjoying the sea and spectacular sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.

There are two ways to experience Lima's beaches. The first is to visit the ones within the city, while another option is to venture further out and reach slightly more laid-back spots. 

To explore the beaches, the best option is always to rent a car. Easier, less stressful, and you get there faster.

That typical Lima photo with a cliff, the paragliding and the sea below is what you'll find along many kilometers. These are beaches that are usually protected by breakwaters and surrounded by boardwalks and viewpoints. Many of them are located directly along the Costa Verde beaches, which is a circuit of seaside resorts stretching along Lima's coastline. 

Some may be perfect for swimming, others for surfing or, simply, for enjoying a walk at a beautiful sunset. Keep in mind that in Peru there are private and public beaches, so sometimes you will have to pay an entrance fee to access the beach.

We'll always say the same thing, all year round is a great time to go to Lima. However, if you want a warm, sunny climate and slightly warmer water, the best time to visit the beaches in Lima is between December and March.

In winter the climate is rather mild, but the sun may disappear for a few days and the water temperature is colder. Of course, nothing will stop you from enjoying the beach, whether to relax or surf.

That said, keep in mind that the high season at the beaches coincides with summer vacation in Peru (and, therefore, prices are a little higher and the beaches are more crowded).

Lima is a really large city, but that doesn't mean it lacks some ideal beaches for disconnecting right in the heart of the city. They're perfect for clearing your head one afternoon after exploring the historic center, or for discovering Lima's coastal life. 

Keep in mind that weekends (and even more so in summer) they tend to be very crowded. We recommend going on a weekday to enjoy much more of what Lima has to offer you.

Here we tell you which three are our favorites.

In Chorrillos, one of Lima's districts neighboring Miraflores, you'll find Playa Los Yuyos. It is one of the beaches in Lima known for being relaxed and peaceful, ideal for those of us looking for a little more tranquility. There are fewer people here and the waves invite many surfers to choose this spot to practice the sport. In fact, if you want, you can even take some surf lessons.

The boardwalk it has is truly beautiful, and from there you can watch the sunset over the ocean. Like practically all of the Peruvian sea, you'll find cold water, but perfect for cooling off on a hot day.

The Agua Dulce Beach is another option in the district of Chorrillos, but unlike Los Yuyos, here you will find one of the most popular spots among Lima locals. It is easy to get to, access is straightforward, and it is very family-friendly. We just have one recommendation: don't go on a weekend as you will most likely come away with a bad impression. But if you go on a weekday, everything changes and the experience is completely different.

As at other beaches in Lima, there are restrooms, umbrella rentals, and many options to try authentic Lima cuisine.

A little further from downtown Lima, about 45 km away, is San Pedro Beach. It is located to the south, in the municipality of Lurín. It is different from the previous ones because its sea is a bit calmer, with a more bluish color and fine sand. What makes this place special is that the landscape looks quite different: in front there are rocky formations rising from the ocean and marine life sanctuaries. These are the famous Pachacamac Islands, which you can visit on an excursion.

If you go to San Pedro Beach, make sure to visit the Archaeological Sanctuary of Pachacamac. Here you will be able to see how the culture of the coastal peoples developed thousands of years ago. It is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Sundays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is very affordable.

To get to San Pedro Beach, the best option is to go by car. From downtown Lima you need to take the 1N, and then the 1S. On a day with normal traffic, the trip can take about 40 minutes. Here you can see the route map.

Some of us choose to go a little further to have different experiences on our trips. The beaches near Lima are very different if you decide to drive about 100 kilometers along the Panamericana heading south. That way, you'll reach perfect places to rest, relax, and take a dip in the Pacific.

Here we share two options for you to take a different route along the Lima coast.

A 113 km south of Lima lies one of Peru's most exclusive beaches. With strong waves, fine sand and spectacular sunsets. Asia Beach is an excellent option for spending a weekend in the sun. Here you'll find bars, clubs, shopping centers and very high-quality accommodations.

Keep in mind that not all beaches have free access, but there are some public ones that are ideal. There you'll find umbrella rentals and dining options to enjoy the excellent Peruvian food.

How to get to Asia from Lima? Very easy. Just take the Panamericana heading south and drive about 113 km. 

A few kilometers before Asia is Playa Las Totoritas. 80 kilometers from the capital and located in the Las Malas district, this beach is one of the most secluded along Lima's coast. Those in the know say it is one of the most peaceful beaches near Lima. Keep in mind that it is a private condominium, but you can still access the beach.

Here you will be able to do the best thing you can do at a beach:  relax and enjoy water sports.

Lima is a city with hundreds of accommodations for every budget. In particular, we recommend staying in the Miraflores or Barranco area. It is safer than the historic center and the services available are top-notch. Restaurants, bars, nightclubs and hotels for any budget. And always with Lima's beaches very close by.

Barranco is a historic district of Lima with a bohemian atmosphere. Here you will find yourself closer to the sea, with the possibility of having splendid views at sunset.

• Arrive early if you go during peak season or on weekends. Also, this way you'll be able to find parking easily.
• Use sun protection. The Lima sun is very strong, and don't be fooled if it's cloudy.
• Rent an umbrella to avoid too much exposure to ultraviolet rays.
• Go to more distant beaches if you want to avoid large crowds.
• Respect the sea. The Pacific has steep drop-offs and heavy waves.
• Take care of the environment.
