The Valle de Las Leñas ski resort is the place that thousands of people choose every year to enjoy the snow in Mendoza. It is located about 80 km from Malargüe, the closest city to the resort. From the city of Mendoza it is 342 km to the south, along National Route 40.

Previously, the ski resorts of Vallecitos and Penitentes also existed, very close to the capital city. However, today they have become recreational spaces in the snow, but without skiing or snowboarding.

Las Leñas is a ski resort with an unmatched landscape. Nestled in the heart of the Andes Mountains, its nearly 2300 meters of altitude guarantee exceptional snow quality and quantity. And as you glide down, the mountains surround you, creating an unforgettable scene. 

It features hotels at the foot of the slopes, 14 lifts, restaurants, and all the necessary services to fully enjoy skiing and snowboarding. There are also bars and nightlife for those looking to combine sport with entertainment. 

And yes. The quality of its infrastructure and easy access make Las Leñas the reason so many of us choose to ski in Mendoza.

With 30 ski slopes, Las Leñas offers a wide range of options for everyone. If you don't know how to ski, you can take a lesson and take your first steps on the beginner slopes.

For those who already have some experience but aren't quite ready for something challenging, the intermediate level slopes are the right choice. But if you're looking for an adrenaline rush because you're an excellent skier, then you need to head straight to the difficult or expert slopes.

Not everyone wants or knows how to ski. Or they travel with children who look for other activities to keep them entertained while they put on their ski gear. For them there are the Snow Park, the Kids' Park and the Adventure area. There they can go snow tubing, sledding, snowshoeing and take beginner ski lessons.

The best way to get to the Valle de Las Leñas ski resort is renting a car in Mendoza and heading south. You need to drive along National Route 40 until the intersection with Provincial Route 222. There you have to turn right and continue a few more kilometers. The total distance is 342 km and it is a paved road in good condition.

To ski in Mendoza the best option is to stay directly in the accommodations available within Valle de las Leñas. There are several hotels, apart hotels and hostels that allow you to easily access the slopes. You will only have to walk with your equipment (or take advantage of the shuttle service some hotels offer) and hit the slopes.

Another option farther away (but more affordable) is to stay in the city of Malargüe. Keep in mind that you will have to drive 80 km each day there and back (160 km in total). This means you need to add the cost of fuel and travel time to your itinerary planning for skiing in Mendoza.

These are the accommodations at Las Leñas. Most of them have restaurants and spaces to store ski equipment.

• Hostel Las Leñas. The favorite among young travelers. It is close to restaurants and the nightlife of the ski resort.

The cost of skiing in Las Leñas varies depending on the season chosen, the number of days you plan to hit the slopes, the hotels where you will be staying, and whether you have your own equipment, among other expenses.

For a general reference, a week of skiing in Las Leñas for one adult starts at a minimum of 1,500 USD.

The price of lift passes at Las Leñas varies depending on the time of the season, the number of days, and whether it is for an adult or a child (ages 6 to 11). Here are some price references for adults (these prices are lower for children):

• One day in low season:  100 USD
• One day in high season 150 USD 
• Three days in low season: 280 USD 
• Three days in high season: 405 USD 
• One week in low season: 540 USD
• One week in high season: 780 USD

In the Las Leñas Valley itself you will find different Ski Rental points where you can rent ski or snowboard equipment. You will find promotions for the whole family, whether you are staying for three days, a week, or two weeks.

To give you an idea of the price, renting a full set of equipment for an adult costs around 20 USD per day. For children, 15 USD per day. If you already have everything except the skis or the board, the price drops considerably.

The ski season in the Valle de Las Leñas begins in June and ends in early September. Depending on the weather, it can sometimes be extended by a few weeks. 

As with any trip, you will need to choose which weeks you will be skiing in Mendoza. Changing by one day can considerably affect the price. 

The high season is in July and early August. During those months, pass prices are more expensive, as is accommodation. And, of course, there are more people.

In addition, there are some weeks considered "special", as they have lower prices compared to the high season. This usually happens before or after the most intense weeks of July begin. Additionally, the first days when the ski resort opens, or shortly before it closes, prices are even lower. These weeks are known as "low season".

As in all ski resorts, the weather can change from one moment to the next. Most days are full of sunshine or, sometimes, overcast. It may happen that at some point you experience some adverse weather conditions such as heavy snowfall with wind. If that occurs, the slopes are closed until the storm passes.

• Carry snow chains and put them on as soon as the road is frozen or covered with snow.
• Keep a moderate speed and avoid braking or turning sharply.
• Use low beams throughout the entire journey, even during the day.
• Check the forecast and road conditions before heading up the mountain.
• Travel with patience and do not overtake other cars on the mountain unless you are 100% sure there is no oncoming traffic.
• Pay attention to road signs and follow the instructions of the Gendarmerie if necessary.
